Romance – Moulin rouge
Mise en scene at the beginning of the film is of red curtains and an audience, as if in a theatre. The film starts with the audience applauding, then the conductor takes over and diegetic music plays. The music is calm and soft and familiar to us “the sound of music”, it is played by an orchestra. The music then becomes quite fast and upbeat as Moulin Rouge is written across the screen in red, the use of the music “the cancan” can symbolise that the Moulin rouge is a fun place to be in and the use of it being written in red could symbolise the dangers in the film, however as it is a romance, it could connote love. Paris and 1900 is then written in on the screen so we know where the film is set and the time of year. The camera starts to zoom in on the screen that the audience is watching, they use special effects to make look as if it is an old film (also in black and white). There’s a mid shot of a man singing, sitting on the roof top, and the view of over his shoulder is Paris. He sings a calm, quite depressing song (of which links in with mood for the next mise en scene of the man telling a story about losing the love of his life). The camera then does an establishing shot of Paris and its streets; it is not in film view anymore so it is as if we are going along with the camera, which is panning rapidly around the streets of Paris, there are long shots of strangers on the streets and the camera will slow down and stop to do a mid shot of some of these strangers, so we can get a good look at the expressions on their faces, this helps us to know the mood of the people living in Paris. The camera continues to pan around Paris, till it comes to an open window, of which it zooms in on this window and picture becomes normal and in colour, to show the present situation. Film editor
Sci fi – I Robot
The camera pans around the room as he looks for the robot, that he believes is in the room. There is also the use of the camera zooming in on all of the broken parts of the robots and as the camera zooms in and forms a close up shot on the face of the robot, of which we are all anxious to see what is about to happen next because we all know it has something to do with the robot that there was a close up of, which typically happens in thrillers. The camera also goes into an over the shoulder shot because as the Camera is panning it views the male in a long shot and over his shoulder is the female; this is so we can see the surroundings.
Panning around the poem when searching for someone is typical in sci-fi’s symbolic codes. When the robot holds the gun up against the male, the female says he’s not dangerous however you can tell by the expression on her face that she doesn’t know if the robot will react. Also the expression on the males face he is unsure as well, although it seems as if he is expecting a reaction, this is a typical thing to do but not just in this genre.
The fact that is in a lab type place is typical for that genre.

PHONE BOOTH – what was Phone Booth about?
The “phone booth” is about a New York City publicist named Stuart Shepard who lives a life telling lie’s whether it is for his job or to his wife Kelly. Stuart or better known as Stu is cheating on his wife Kelly with his secret girlfriend Pam, of which to keep his wife from knowing the truth about his affair he calls Pam everyday from a pay phone, but what he doesn’t know is, all of his calls made to this pay phone have been listened to, by a psychopath, who makes it his job to get rid of the liars, and the selfish ones who don’t consider the feelings of others, of which Stuart Shepard is to discover.
Stuart makes his way to the phone booth, as he does every day, but as he waits outside the booth, the phone rings, of which a ringing phone always has to be answered. He answers the phone half expecting it to be Pam, but instead it is a man who tells Stuart that he knows everything about him and his secret affair with Pam and he tells him that to save his own life he is to stay in that phone booth till he has confessed everything to his wife and girlfriend and if he hangs up he will kill him. Stu doesn’t believe him until the psychopath tells him his exact location and the red light from the rifle of the psychopath is pointing on his chest.
The psychopath tells him he is to confess everything to his wife Kelly and his girlfriend Pam and if he doesn’t he will kill him, but whilst he makes him confess he has his way with him, first ordering him to do things which can make him look foolish and also smartly trying to stitch him up for a murder which happened right in front of his very eyes, by planting a gun in the phone booth.
Because of the murder and the fact Stu will not come out of the phone booth, there are a whole lot of police officers and media and amongst the crowds is Pam and Kelly, of which he pours his heart out for forgiveness to his wife Kelly. The psycho, for him to let him go he has to chose from Pam and Kelly to be killed, but Stu puts the phone down and says for the psycho to take his life instead of which the psycho believes he has learnt his lesson, whilst this happens the police believe they have tracked the caller but Stu discovers when he’s safe that they did not find the psycho as he comes face to face with him!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TODAYS LESSON- 2nd october
today we watched a scene from a thriller and analysed wat we saw, e.g medium shots close ups, lighting, relationships between people in the scene and i learnt what an establishing shot is and how it is used in the beginning of a film, i also learnt how credits at the start of a movie can also show or illustrate something, in this case the thriller "Psycho" its credits broke up which we believe it illustrated the broken mind of a psycho and how things would appear in their eyes.
